'Suicide bridge' spurs feud

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Krysta Dorr drives a different route to work these days, six months after finding a woman's crumpled body on an isolated road beneath the span locals call "suicide bridge."

"I still have nightmares, dreaming someone is falling on top of me," says Dorr, 21, a waitress at the Cold Spring Tavern just a few hundred feet from where Stagecoach Road passes beneath the Cold Spring Canyon Bridge. "I will not drive down that way again."

Girl posing as fence builder accused of smuggling

SAN DIEGO — A 16-year-old girl has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle 12 illegal immigrants while posing as a construction worker on the border fence in San Diego.

The Border Patrol says the girl, wearing a yellow hard hat and safety vest, was apprehended early Thursday. She was driving a pickup truck marked as belonging to Kiewit Corp. of Omaha, Neb., which is building about three miles of border fencing.

The Border Patrol says a Mexican passenger also wore a hard had and vest. There were eight men and three women in a modified compartment below the pickup truck bed.

Work starts on Les Eva Field backstop, outfield

The fencing replacement is part of a two-pronged project that also will bring new picnic grounds to the park just beyond the outfield fence, city Recreation and Facilities Manager Sandy Jacobson said Wednesday.

The $36,000 project will not delay the western Nevada County Recreation Services softball season, as games will be played elsewhere for the first two weeks of the season, Jacobson said.

Work is being done by low bidder Arrow Fence of Rocklin.
