Chainlink fence behind Socorro Student Activities Complex still in planning stages, district officials say

EL PASO - Work on a fence behind the Socorro Student Activities Complex, 1300 N. Joe Battle, has yet to begin, a school district spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Spokeswoman Vicki Icard Hibbs said construction on the chainlink fence will begin after the property is surveyed. Plans call for the fence to be built along the edge of the district's property line, Hibbs said. However, Hibbs said there is no guarantee the fence will cut down traffic to the desert area behind the complex.

UTB discusses the ‘campus fence'

After a drawn out legal battle and months of negotiations behind closed doors, UTB-TSC President Juliet V. Garcia spoke openly on Friday about the border fence that once threatened to divide the university's campus.

For nearly a year, the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College was embroiled in a lawsuit with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. At the end of July, the university reached a compromise with the federal government, agreeing to enhance an existing fence instead of erecting a new one through campus.

Teen dies after falling on spiked fence

A night of criminal mischief turned deadly for a Wise County 15 year old, authorities said.

Police said the teen was running in an attempt to escape capture when he fell on a spiked wrought iron fence. He later died from his injury.

The Wise County sheriff said it all began with two brothers breaking into cars Friday night. While the younger brother was caught, his older brother was later found dead.

Trent Tabor said he was alerted to the teens after he heard a noise at about 11:30 p.m. Friday outside his Aurora home.
