Private pools require fences

If a prefabricated or constructed pool is more than 2 feet deep, the owner also must obtain a permit from the city of Dubuque.

The city of Dubuque is reminding residents of their responsibility in helping to prevent pool-related injuries.

Death by drowning in private pools has caused many cities and counties to enact ordinances requiring barriers or fencing around swimming pools.

Dubuque's ordinance defines a "swimming pool" as any constructed or prefabricated pool that is more than 18 inches deep and is used for swimming, bathing or wading.
